The heel of Italy’s boot: a suggestive itinerary through Apulian history, flavors and nature, with a short stay in the region of Naples
DAILY PROGRAM
Day 1: NAPLES
Arrival at Naples airport, welcome by our English speaking tour leader and coach transfer to the hotel, located in the surroundings of Naples. Accommodation in a 4* hotel such as Hotel La Panoramica in Castellammare, or similar. Welcome drink. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: AMALFI - POMPEII
Breakfast at the hotel, then departure by coach for a full day excursion with our tour leader. In the morning, departure to Amalfi along the panoramic road of the Sorrento Peninsula, with its amazing view of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Drive through the hills of Agerola, a route that will allow you to admire the lush vegetation and the charming landscapes of the Amalfi Coast. Free time to discovery the ancient Maritime Republic of Amalfi with a look at the imposing Cathedral of St. Andrew, whose architecture bears witness to the imprint of contacts with the East. Free time for lunch (not included). Then drive through Maiori and Vietri to reach the highway to Pompeii. In the afternoon, guided tour of the ruins of Pompeii, an old Roman city buried during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. It is a wonderful testimony to the daily life of the imperial period, preserved in an almost perfect state, lending itself wonderfully to an evocation of the ancient world. Back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: VESUVIUS
After breakfast, departure by coach for a daily excursion with our tour leader. In the morning, guided tour of Naples. Walk through the most famous squares and monuments: Piazza Municipio and Castel Nuovo, also known as “ Maschio Angioino", which dominates the entire port city of Naples, Piazza Plebiscito, one of the most beautiful and largest squares in the city, where stands the charming Royal Palace. Then you will go to the San Carlo Theatre, the oldest in the world, and the Galleria Umberto I. Finally, walk along the district of Spaccanapoli, with its narrow streets showing all the picturesque charm and warmth of southern people. Free time for lunch (not included). In the afternoon, drive to Mount Vesuvius. Ascent to 1,000 meters, then possibility to continue on foot to the crater. Guided tour and descent. Back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: CASTEL DEL MONTE - TRANI - ALBEROBELLO
Breakfast at the hotel, then departure by coach for a daily excursion with our tour leader. In the morning road to Castel del Monte and guided visit of this isolated fortress located on one of the highest heights of the “Murge”. Tour of the castle, a unique medieval architecture masterpiece, built in the 12th century by the will of Frederick II. Drive to Trani and free time for lunch (not included). In the afternoon, visit of Trani, a town whose origins are probably prehistoric, famous for its artistic and architectural testimonies. Stop and guided tour of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Pilgrim, one of the most beautiful and suggestive of the area, also thanks to its location by the sea. Walk through the historic centre with its 5th century palaces and Gothic churches that remind us of the city's glorious past. Road to Alberobello, accommodation in a 4* hotel such as Hotel La Chiusa di Chietri, or similar. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: LECCE - OTRANTO
Breakfast at the hotel, then departure by coach for a daily excursion with our tour leader. In the morning guided tour of Lecce, the Baroque pearl of southern Italy. Known as "The Florence of the South", Lecce is considered a true architectural masterpiece of the Baroque and Rococo styles. Walking through the charming streets of the historic center you will discover the exuberance of the Baroque through the facades of its remarkable monuments such as the beautiful Basilica of Santa Croce, the Dome Square with its Cathedral and other marvels with pink stone decor. Free time for lunch (not included). In the afternoon, continue to Otranto, an ancient port city on the Adriatic coast. Guided tour of the village, which develops around the impressive Aragonese Castle and the Norman Cathedral. Guided tour of the cathedral with mosaics dating back to 1165 and its huge crypt. Back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6: BARI - ALBEROBELLO - OSTUNI
Breakfast at the hotel, then departure by coach for a daily excursion with our tour leader. In the morning, guided visit of Bari: among the historic streets of Bari Vecchia and its walls overlooking the sea, lies the famous Basilica of St. Nicholas of Bari, one of the most beautiful examples of Roman architecture. In the old town also lies the Cathedral of San Sabino, a Roman-style church built on the ruins of a Byzantine cathedral. Road to the majestic Swabian Castle, built by Frederick II in 1233 (external view). Traditional lunch with taste of local products in a “Masseria" nearby Alberobello, a typical farmhouse of this area. In the afternoon, guided visit of Alberobello, a village recognized as a Unesco World Heritage Site, and known all over the world for the Trulli, typical dry-stone buildings with funny conical roofs. Brief stop in Ostuni, known as the “white city” because of its whitewashed houses superimposed like cubes, reminiscent of oriental cities. Brief visit to a cellar dedicated to wine production, with a small wine tasting. Back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7: MATERA - CASTELLAMMARE
Breakfast at the hotel, then departure by coach for a daily excursion with our tour leader. In the morning, guided visit (half-day) of Matera, designated as European Capital of Culture in 2019. Tour of the “Sassi", a group of troglodytic houses and sanctuaries dug in the natural caves of the Murgia. Apparently these represent the first testimonies of dwellings in Italy. Free time for lunch (not included), then drive to Castellammare. Accommodation in a 4* hotel such as Hotel La Panoramica, or similar. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 8: DEPARTURE
Breakfast at the hotel, then transfer by coach to Naples airport with our tour escort. Check-in assistance and end of our services.
The price includes:
